Why Teach Life Skills to Teens? We are mistaken to think that teens know anything in life although they might give us the impressions that they do, and this is proven by educational statistics. Teens are not really taught life skills in school, and you will find that most homes or parents don’t teach these lessons at home, either. Yes, it is true that children are given sufficient education on different subject matters which they can really be good at, but this alone is not enough to equip a child the essential life skills that will not make them rely on others to give them what they need to know, but help them to figure out for themselves what they want in life and how they can teach themselves to attain it. Some say that this kind of children are street smart. If children learn life skills, they would not have a difficult time succeeding in life. One thing that teens need to learn is about money and its value. The need to learn the value of money since most parents are just there shelling out money for every whim of their teenager but not teaching them what money means, how one earns money, the value of saving money for what you need, and waiting to have money for the things you want. Still under cost of money, what comes next is the cost it takes to carry out the task. Teens need to learn what taxes mean, how to save, how to balance their accounts and how to budget. What teens of today lack is the skill of earning money, saving money, giving money, and spending money wisely. Those are the basics about money that no educational institute is engage in or is teaching their students or playact it. Teens are also looked down when they have a side job or a part time work and people look at it as distasteful or a step away from being fully involved in sports and school activities.

Other skills that teens need to learn are cooking, cleaning, and doing the laundry. These skills will be valuable no matter where a teen lives, works, or goes to school. When teens are deprive from this basic skill, the love of it and the responsibility that it carries, the tendency is to overspend on cooked food that are contained on easy to throw packages and belie prudence in spending and saving.

The need to sew or at least even just to put a new button on or fix a hole in a seam is important. Home Economics, the subject that is supposed to teach teens these skills, have been taken out from most school curriculum. Polite conversation is seriously missing in our teen’s speech nowadays. It is not old-fashioned to expect a teenager to say hello and thank you when speaking with parents or adults. It is very easy for teens to disrespect their elders which should not be the case; teens need to learn how to respect elders and this is already a rare commodity these days.
